Acrylates Copolymer

Also known as: Synthetic polymer, Acrylic copolymer

Low ConcernmicroplasticEWG: 3-5

A synthetic polymer thickener and film-former classified as an intentional microplastic by the EU.

How it works

Acrylates copolymer is used to thicken formulas, create films, and suspend particles. The EU's intentional microplastics regulation (REACH) targets such synthetic solid polymer particles as environmental pollutants. While individual product risk is low, cumulative release into waterways from cosmetic use is significant. It does not biodegrade.

Safety & restrictions

EU REACH microplastics restriction will progressively ban intentional microplastics in cosmetics from 2023–2035. Environmental persistence concern. Not acutely toxic to humans but contributes to microplastic pollution.
