Alcohol Denat.

Also known as: Denatured Alcohol, Ethanol, SD Alcohol

Moderate ConcernalcoholEWG: 5-8

Denatured ethanol used as a solvent, preservative, and penetration enhancer — but drying and disruptive to the barrier.

How it works

Alcohol Denat. is ethanol made undrinkable by adding denaturing agents. At high concentrations in cosmetics (>20%), it disrupts the skin barrier by dissolving lipids, increases TEWL, and causes dryness and irritation over time. At low concentrations in a formula or in rinse-off products it has minimal impact. It is particularly problematic in leave-on products marketed as 'oil-free' toners.
