The highest-concern paraben — a strong oestrogen mimicker that accumulates in body tissue.

How it works

Butylparaben has the highest oestrogenic potency among common cosmetic parabens. It accumulates in adipose tissue and has been found in breast tumour samples. It inhibits testosterone production and is linked to developmental and reproductive toxicity in animal models. Many manufacturers have voluntarily removed it from formulations.

Avoid if

Everyone — particularly pregnancy, children, and hormone-sensitive conditions
