Homosalate

Also known as: Homomethyl salicylate, HMS

Moderate ConcernUV filterEWG: 4-6

A UVB chemical filter that accumulates in the body and has weak endocrine disruption evidence.

How it works

Homosalate absorbs UVB radiation (295–315nm) and is used primarily to enhance the SPF of sunscreen formulas. Studies show it penetrates skin and accumulates in the body faster than it can be eliminated. The EU SCCS concluded in 2021 that homosalate is not safe above 0.5% due to systemic absorption and potential endocrine effects — but it is currently allowed at up to 10% in the EU.
