Methylparaben

Also known as: Paraben, E218, Methyl p-hydroxybenzoate

High ConcernpreservativeEWG: 4-7

A synthetic preservative with endocrine-disrupting properties that mimics oestrogen.

How it works

Methylparaben inhibits microbial growth and is highly effective as a preservative. However, it penetrates skin, enters the bloodstream, and mimics oestrogen. It has been detected in breast tumour tissue, though a causal link to breast cancer has not been established. It is the mildest paraben but still belongs to the controversial class.
