Oxybenzone

Also known as: Benzophenone-3, BP-3

High ConcernUV filterEWG: 8

A highly effective chemical UV filter that absorbs UVB and UVA2 — but is a known endocrine disruptor.

How it works

Oxybenzone absorbs UV radiation and converts it to heat. It is one of the most effective broad-spectrum chemical UV filters available and has been used since the 1970s. However, it penetrates skin and enters the bloodstream, has been detected in blood, urine, and breast milk, and acts as a weak oestrogen mimicker. It is also toxic to coral reefs and is banned in Hawaii and Palau.
