Polyethylene

Also known as: PE, Polyethylene Beads, Micro-PE

Moderate ConcernmicroplasticEWG: 5-8

A solid plastic polymer used in scrubs and exfoliants that pollutes waterways and marine ecosystems.

How it works

Polyethylene microbeads were widely used as physical exfoliants in scrubs and cleansers. After rinsing off, they pass through sewage treatment plants and accumulate in waterways and marine sediments, where they absorb persistent organic pollutants and enter the food chain. Bans on rinse-off microbeads are now in place in the UK, US, EU, and many other countries.
