Ferulic Acid

Also known as: Plant-based antioxidant

Generally SafeantioxidantEWG: 1

A plant-derived antioxidant that doubles the efficacy of Vitamins C and E when combined.

How it works

Ferulic acid is a hydroxycinnamic acid from plant cell walls that scavenges free radicals and stabilises other antioxidants — particularly Vitamins C and E. The combination of Vitamin C + Vitamin E + Ferulic Acid (the 'triple antioxidant' system) has been shown to provide 8× the photoprotection of Vitamin C alone. It is also a mild UV absorber.

Concentration note

Typically 0.5–1% alongside Vitamin C (10–20%) and Vitamin E (1%).
