Vitamin E

Also known as: Tocopherol, Alpha-Tocopherol, Tocopheryl Acetate

Generally SafeantioxidantEWG: 1-3

A fat-soluble antioxidant that protects skin lipids from oxidative damage and supports barrier repair.

How it works

Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) is the most abundant fat-soluble antioxidant in human skin. It protects cell membranes and skin lipids from free radical damage, neutralises reactive oxygen species generated by UV exposure, and works synergistically with Vitamin C (which regenerates oxidised Vitamin E). Tocopheryl acetate is the esterified, more stable form that converts to tocopherol on skin.

Concentration note

Effective at 0.5–1% (tocopherol). Higher amounts can feel greasy.
