Alpha-Arbutin

Also known as: α-Arbutin, 4-Hydroxyphenyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside

Generally SafeactiveEWG: 1-3

A highly effective and safe tyrosinase inhibitor for fading dark spots and uneven skin tone.

How it works

Alpha-arbutin is a glycoside of hydroquinone that inhibits tyrosinase — the enzyme responsible for melanin synthesis. Unlike hydroquinone, it does not damage melanocytes but competitively and reversibly inhibits the enzyme. The alpha configuration (vs. beta-arbutin found in plants) provides significantly greater efficacy at lower concentrations.

Concentration note

Effective at 1–2%. Requires consistent daily use for 8–12 weeks to see results.
