Dimethicone

Also known as: Polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS, Silicone

Generally SafesiliconeEWG: 1-3

A skin-conditioning silicone that creates a smooth, protective film and fills in fine lines.

How it works

Dimethicone is a linear silicone polymer that forms a breathable, water-repellent film on skin. It reduces transepidermal water loss, creates a smooth slip on skin, and temporarily fills in fine lines and pores for an optical smoothing effect. High molecular weight dimethicones stay on the surface; lower molecular weight forms can penetrate slightly.

No known significant safety concerns for topical use. Environmental persistence concern — silicones are slow to biodegrade. Some silicone compounds (cyclic silicones D4, D5) are restricted in EU wash-off products.
