Glycerin

Also known as: Glycerol, Glycerine

Generally SafehumectantEWG: 1

A gentle humectant that draws moisture from the air into the skin.

How it works

Glycerin is a small, water-soluble molecule that forms hydrogen bonds with water, keeping it locked in the stratum corneum. It also reinforces the skin barrier by filling gaps between corneocytes. At concentrations above 30%, it can draw moisture from deeper skin layers, so it works best in humid environments or layered under an occlusive.

Concentration note

Typically 2–15% in leave-on products. Most effective at 5% or above.
