Petrolatum

Also known as: Petroleum Jelly, White Petrolatum, Vaseline

Generally SafeocclusiveEWG: 1-4 (grade dependent)

The most effective occlusive moisturiser known, creating a near-impermeable barrier on skin.

How it works

Petrolatum is a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. It reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by approximately 98% — the highest efficacy of any known occlusive. It does not add moisture but locks existing moisture in. Cosmetic-grade petrolatum is highly refined to remove polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Concentration note

Often used at 20–100% in ointments. Even small amounts in a formula provide significant occlusion.
