A mineral UV filter and white pigment — excellent UVB protection, more limited UVA coverage than zinc oxide.
Titanium dioxide primarily scatters and absorbs UVB radiation (280–320nm) and some short UVA2 (320–340nm). It has weaker UVA1 protection than zinc oxide, so it is often combined with zinc oxide for full-spectrum coverage. It is also used as a white pigment (CI 77891) in foundations and tinted moisturisers.
Topical use considered safe by all major regulatory bodies. Inhalation concern for powder forms — do not inhale. EU has removed it as a food additive over inhalation manufacturing risks (unrelated to topical use).
