Bakuchiol

Also known as: Plant retinol, Psoralea Corylifolia Seed Extract

Generally SafebotanicalEWG: 1

A plant-derived retinol alternative that activates the same skin pathways without the irritation or pregnancy restriction.

How it works

Bakuchiol is a meroterpene from babchi plant seeds that has been shown to activate retinol-like gene expression — stimulating collagen synthesis, reducing fine lines, and fading hyperpigmentation — through a different receptor pathway than true retinoids. Clinical studies show comparable results to 0.5% retinol at 0.5% bakuchiol with significantly less irritation.

Concentration note

Studies use 0.5%. Unlike retinol, it can be used morning and evening and does not increase photosensitivity.
