Mandelic Acid

Also known as: AHA, Almond acid

Generally SafeAHAEWG: 2-4

A gentle, large-molecule AHA that exfoliates superficially with additional antibacterial benefits.

How it works

Mandelic acid has a larger molecular weight than glycolic or lactic acid, resulting in slower absorption and gentler exfoliation. It has demonstrated antibacterial properties against P. acnes and mild melanin-inhibiting activity. Its gentleness makes it particularly suitable for darker skin tones where other AHAs can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
