The gold-standard over-the-counter retinoid for anti-ageing, acne, and skin renewal.
Retinol is converted in the skin to retinaldehyde, then to retinoic acid — the active form that binds retinoid receptors and regulates gene expression. This stimulates collagen synthesis, accelerates cell turnover, normalises keratin production, and reduces sebum. The conversion process takes time and is why retinol is slower than prescription tretinoin, but also less irritating.
Concentration note
Start at 0.025–0.05%. Work up to 0.1–1% over months. Higher is not always better.
Avoid during pregnancy — Vitamin A derivatives are teratogenic at high systemic doses. Causes initial purging, dryness, and photosensitivity — use SPF daily and introduce slowly.
