Retinol

Also known as: Vitamin A, ROL

Low ConcernretinoidEWG: 5-9 (pregnancy concern dominates score)

The gold-standard over-the-counter retinoid for anti-ageing, acne, and skin renewal.

How it works

Retinol is converted in the skin to retinaldehyde, then to retinoic acid — the active form that binds retinoid receptors and regulates gene expression. This stimulates collagen synthesis, accelerates cell turnover, normalises keratin production, and reduces sebum. The conversion process takes time and is why retinol is slower than prescription tretinoin, but also less irritating.

Concentration note

Start at 0.025–0.05%. Work up to 0.1–1% over months. Higher is not always better.
