An oil-soluble acid that penetrates pores to dissolve blackheads and excess sebum.
Salicylic acid is lipophilic (oil-soluble), allowing it to penetrate the sebum-filled pores that water-soluble AHAs cannot reach. It dissolves the bonds between cells lining pores, clearing congestion and reducing blackheads. It also has anti-inflammatory properties via the same pathway as aspirin (salicylates).
Concentration note
0.5–2% OTC. Above 2% is Rx in many countries. Most effective at pH 3–4.
Avoid in pregnancy at high concentrations (systemic salicylate absorption concern). Do not use on large body areas. Increases photosensitivity.
