Salicylic Acid

Also known as: BHA, Beta Hydroxy Acid, Willow bark (natural source)

Low ConcernBHAEWG: 4-6

An oil-soluble acid that penetrates pores to dissolve blackheads and excess sebum.

How it works

Salicylic acid is lipophilic (oil-soluble), allowing it to penetrate the sebum-filled pores that water-soluble AHAs cannot reach. It dissolves the bonds between cells lining pores, clearing congestion and reducing blackheads. It also has anti-inflammatory properties via the same pathway as aspirin (salicylates).

Concentration note

0.5–2% OTC. Above 2% is Rx in many countries. Most effective at pH 3–4.
