Retinal

Also known as: Retinaldehyde, RAL

Low ConcernretinoidEWG: 6-9

One step closer to active retinoic acid than retinol — significantly more potent with faster visible results.

How it works

Retinal (retinaldehyde) requires only one conversion step to become retinoic acid (vs. retinol which needs two steps). Studies show it works approximately 11× faster than retinol at equivalent concentrations. It also has direct antimicrobial activity against acne bacteria. Despite its potency, it is still available without prescription.

Concentration note

Typically 0.05–0.1% — effective at very low concentrations due to potency.
